What are Microgreens?


Microgreens are currently one of the trendiest food items in the diet and nutrition world - and with good reason. A few days older than sprouts, they are used to beautify a plate, blended in smoothies, mixed into salads, or added to sandwiches or stir fries. 

Many say that Microgreens are the new superfoods of this decade. As shown in a 2012 USDA study and several studies since, Microgreens and micro herbs are extremely nutritious, in many case up to 40 times more nutritious than their full grown versions. Most varieties tend to be rich in potassium, iron, zinc, magnesium and copper and a mix vitamins.

A lot of vegetables contain beneficial polyphenols, which are naturally occurring chemicals that contain amazing antioxidant properties. Helping to fight the build-up of free radicals in the body, polyphenols have also been known to reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s disease, cancer, and heart disease. 

In fact, Microgreens are considered by many to be the superhero of superfoods.

Debra Tay (Deb) 

Growing up in urban Singapore, Deb learned to grow her own food when she moved to Australia.  Together with her friend Strats, Deb designed the UrbanSproutz Grow Kit, with the aim of helping every home to grow their own food in an easy and sustainable way.

Deb is also extremely passionate about health and hopes that via UrbanSproutz, she will be able to help more people to eat healthily, achieve mental wellness and live a better life.

Being a foodie, Deb saw the increased interest in Microgreens and loves finding new ways to include Microgreens into her meals. Growing her own Microgreens, herbs & vegetables ensures she always has a fresh organic supply!

With UrbanSproutz, Deb finally gets to bring together her years of experience running large teams in financial institutions and being a serial entrepreneur, with wanting to build a socially responsible, sustainability-focused business.

As the third generation of an Australian agricultural entrepreneurial family, Strats grew up with farming talk all around him. In his teens, his family bought an avocado farm and the lifelong journey of a love for growing things continued.

Now Strats has a rooftop urban farm in Singapore and wants everyone to learn how easy it is to grow-your-own Microgreens which are jammed packed full of rich vitamins and nutrients.

Strats is passionate about organic food and is concerned that we do not yet realise the health impact of how much pesticides, toxins and unnatural ingredients we consume on a daily basis.

Strats is also extremely concerned about the waste that we are generating in this generation, and ensures that UrbanSproutz minimises waste and uses only biodegradable materials where possible.
